At one point in life, most people complain about back pains. This is a common problem that is triggered by bad posture while standing or sitting. Back pain is also caused by underlying medical conditions. This condition is common in people between 35 and 55 years old. In most cases, back pains disappear after few weeks. However, there are long-term pains that keep coming back.
What causes back pain?
Some things will increase the likelihood of developing back pains. Such factors include;
Smoking- this can result in the damage of tissues in the back hence leading to pains.
- Obesity- Extra weight can put much pressure on your spine thus causing pains on your back.
- Pregnancy- additional weight caused by carrying a baby can put the strain on the back and increase the chances of experiencing pains.
- Medical conditions-osteoporosis, arthritis, cauda equine syndrome, Sciatica, and cancer of the spine are major causes of back pains. Moreover, structural problems such as bulging or ruptured disks can lead to pains.
- Poor posture-sitting or standing in an awkward position can result in pains in the back. Also, most of the everyday activities can lead to back pains.
Diagnosis of back pain
Most general practitioners can diagnose the back pain by interviewing the patients and carrying out a physical examination. In most cases, image scans are not necessary. However, the doctor may recommend for further test if the problem is serious. In this case, the doctor can carry out tests such as;
- X-rays-this shows whether the patient has broken bones or arthritis. However, X-rays are not ideal for detecting issues with the spinal cord, muscles, and disks.
- CT or MRI scans-this is perfect for identifying problems with nerves, tissues, muscles, and blood vessels.
- Bone Scan-is used to detect the bone tumors or problems caused by osteoporosis- a condition characterized by brittle bones.
- Electromyography-this is used to identify problems resulting with narrowed spinal cords or herniated disk.
Treatment of back pain
If the problem does not improve within few weeks, it is advisable to visit a general practitioner. The doctor will recommend treatment options including;
- Using strong painkillers
- Manual therapy such as acupuncture, chiropractic, and physiotherapy.
- Exercise classes aimed at improving the posture and strengthening the muscles
